Woodland Shadow – Oil over Acrylic on Panel – 11”x 14”
Now, don’t get me wrong. There are some glorious paintings of black bears out there. Still, for some reason, this species has produced some of the most interesting results I’ve seen in wildlife art. There have been bears that resemble wolves, dogs, weasels, bats, gophers, and gorillas. It seems this mass of black fur with a snout and pin-hole eyes would be relatively easy to paint convincingly. Yet he remains a perennial challenge for artists. In this impressionistic black bear oil painting, I wanted to be sure his features proved a faithful depiction of the animal.
