Among my series of western paintings, this bull rider was the first.  It quickly became evident that “less is more” when it came to painting technique in this work.  I found it effective to allow the hindquarters of the bull and even part of the cowboy to dissolve in the glowing cloud of dust behind.  Conversely, the area of least motion (the bull’s face and front hooves) were given greater detail, acting as a focal point and anchor to the composition.
