Depicting animals in sculpture is not unlike depicting humans. The natural drama of life can be heightened when shown in three-dimensional art. Here, a mountain lion (cougar) is perched atop a stony pinnacle, surveying its hunting grounds. The composition is driven by presenting the cat’s main bulk supported above its narrowing stance upon the rocky perch. To me, the shape of this rather formal-looking reverse pyramid is very pleasing when grounded by the stone beneath the animal’s paws.
