Surgical Hands –  Colored Pencil on Paper

Scientific and technical artwork often calls for rendering, or at least suggesting, the position of various body parts relative to the procedure being conveyed. One common instance of this is the need for featuring hands as part of instructional images. In certain surgical illustrations, it’s important to include natural looking hands to clearly demonstrate what the surgeon will be doing during the operation, as well as what instruments he or she will be using. To me, from an artistic standpoint, depicting a surgeon’s hands at work also helps emphasize the compassionate, healing nature of the medical profession.
