The deep of blue green water beneath a sleek sailing vessel, the pristine azure sky on a summer’s day, the romantic solitude of a couple spending time at one with nature – all of these went into the inspiration behind the painting shown here. While the natural surroundings combine with the billowing gray sails to form an overall cool scheme of colors in the piece, the accents of bright red in the boat and the insignia on the mainsail bring sparkle and warmth to the scene. The two sailors complete the visual story and introduce a necessary human element to the composition.
Details abound throughout the natural and human-manufactured subjects included. Many of the sailboat’s ropes or “sheets” are depicted along with specific pieces of hardware. The stars and stripes flutter behind the vessel. The couple is safely equipped with their life vests while the wind fills the sails, creating tension and folds as the material is stretched. Foam sprays before the bow as the wake churns behind the rudder. The piece encompasses a blending of the seeming randomness of nature and the geometry of the man-made.
