I’ve had the opportunity of creating some artwork based on fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. This particular painting was inspired by one of their lesser known works, entitled “The Four Skilful Brothers,” which, if obscure, is still quite entertaining!  The painting depicts the moment at which the enormous dragon had secured the King’s daughter for himself upon a rock situated safely out in the ocean.  She was eventually rescued by, well… the four skillful brothers of course, who found the dragon asleep with his head on the damsel’s lap.  This would also have made an interesting illustration, especially since the dragon was apparently so large that his eventual fall destroyed the ship on which the four brothers had been sailing!  The unapologetic implausibility of the Grimms’ tales is certainly part of their enduring charm over all these years.
