Right Lung – Pen & Ink on Paper Vellum
This lung drawing was created based on a sketch I made from a dissection. In humans, the right lung comprises three lobes which can be clearly seen here. The left lung has only two lobes. Because this specimen came from a dissection, the lobes appear somewhat more loosely arranged than we might expect in a living lung still situated in the thoracic cavity.
Pen and ink is one of the standard traditional media for drawing science-related artwork. The clean, sharp lines make for exceptional clarity when trying to convey precise information. Also, clean black and white line art is relatively inexpensive to reproduce, and can be easily duplicated while retaining its highly readable characteristics.
