This figure painting was designed as a statement about contrast.  It is as much a graphic work as a an academic representation of human anatomy.  The volumetric portrayal of the woman creates a subtle tension with the two-dimensionality of the background.  The intensity of the scarlet robe and the crisp darkness of the woman’s hair also produce a sharp contrast with the pale-colored subject and background.
