R&D for the Visual Fine Artist
Inherent in the field of independent fine art is the need for frequent research in the various subject matter of an artist’s work. Lately, I’ve been receiving a lot of requests for animal portraits, some wild, and others domestic. The other day, I took a trip to the zoo to get some photographs of wild animals to help in creating wildlife art. One client in particular requested a specific animal species for a commissioned oil painting. It just so happened that the exhibit which I needed at the zoo was under major construction and not accessible to the public.
Over the course of a few weeks leading up to my visit, I worked with the Marketing & PR department at the zoo to gain special access to see the exhibit. They were very accommodating and helpful to make this exception for me. After spending a good amount of time with camera, hard hat, and very charming and cooperative critters, I made a day of it and checked out the other animals at the park as well. I like to arm myself with lots of photos on occasions like this, not only for current art projects but for possible future ones as well.
