Memoirs of a Giant Bee Sculptor

Spring is here, and I thought this would be as good a time as any to share a little bit about a very interesting and unusual art project I was asked to design last year.  The event was the 2010 Pioneer Day Youth Parade in Salt Lake City.  I picked the bee theme to represent the “beehive state”.  The subject of the float is charitable service, represented by the busy bees serving around the world.

It took the dedicated talents of a remarkable team of volunteers to engineer and construct this rolling, bouncing sculpture.  It was so much fun to mingle and work with them, often into the dark of night.  Enjoy the pics and reminisce with me about what turned into a cheery and very colorful day…

This is the second such project I had the opportunity of designing.  The first was a few years prior and consisted of a large eagle sporting the stars and stripes of the American flag.
