The lithe, muscular forms of cheetahs are among the many stunning spectacles of African fauna. Various big cat species are rightly associated with strength, power and general monarchy over their domains. However, the life of a cheetah is not an easy one. Cheetahs (the world’s fastest land animals) need to hunt frequently to earn a living and fuel their lightning fast metabolisms. In chasing down prey for itself and its cubs, the animal sprints itself to exhaustion, sometimes without success, often having to defend its meal against hungry interlopers such as lions and hyenas. The two animals in this painting survey the arid landscape of their savannah home, spotted sentinels of survival against the expansive African sky.
