This sculpture was created in response to a gallery owner who invited me to participate in a show themed around the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.  I wanted to explore a lesser known tale from these classic works, but one which I found interesting and exciting at the same time.  The Griffin is a wonderful little story which, like so many of the others, involves a princess whose hand is being sought by a young suitor who’s required to accomplish some fairly daunting tasks to earn his bride.  Yet this story particularly stands out to me for its variety of fanciful characters, humor, and message.  In the sculpture, it was a treat to engage in the myriad of textural details from the griffin’s feathers to the hanging drapery of the bed.
