When beginning a wildlife painting, I typically have an emphasis in mind. Sometimes it’s the animal’s movement, or capturing its personality in a defining moment. Often I’m intrigued by textures in the animal’s coat, the details of its features, and even the surrounding environment. This bison portrait is an example of my interest in such details. Textures and details serve to underscore the reality of the quiet danger and precarious peace hanging in the air between us and the “fortress.”
This painting won first place in a juried exhibition entitled Just Buffaloes, which focused exclusively on artistic depictions of bison.
