Fantasy Art Gallery Installed
It’s here! There’s a new page devoted to fantasy art and related material at deanvigyikan.com. The new collection currently features 25 artworks comprising fantasy, sci-fi, and surreal subject matter. It’s a colorful group of images. Many of them tell stories of their own, while the viewer’s imagination is also given the chance to run with what’s presented and fill in the details of the various storylines.
At present, most of the pieces in the gallery are digital paintings created with Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo. Both of these are powerful software platforms which artists use to create paintings, almost like painting with traditional brushes and pigments. The collection also includes a few natural media paintings done in oil and acrylic. I expect to continue using both natural and digital media going forward in creating imaginative artworks.

Generally speaking there are two approaches to the works currently represented in the group. First, there’s the more realistic, painted look. This style is created using either real life paint and brushes, or a digital painting technique which approximates that look and feel. Secondly, there’s the “line art” style. In this case the art is structured around what looks like a traditional ink drawing, and then painted “within the lines” to add the important element of color. The result is an effect that resembles frames from a traditional animated film.
Science fiction and fantasy illustrators take their cues for subject matter from all kinds of sources. Some like to create paintings based on literarature. Others create commissioned pieces or fan art based on film or video game characters and scenarios. And of course many create their own unique worlds and stories, populated by characters of their own invention. Across the spectrum of this supremely entertaining genre, viewers are treated to remarkable imaginations brought to life with skill, clarity, and nuance. Indeed, to many, it’s a genre that brings out many of the very best, and often hard won, skills attainable by artists. Perhaps this is one of the reasons it’s so popular among so many art fans.
