The artwork, or imagery, in this painting is personally evocative to me. In addition to having provided the chance of painting from a particularly handsome chocolate lab, it also probes somewhat a theme I’ve explored previously, and that is juxtaposition. In creating this painting I found myself reflecting and focusing on the interplay of the two and three dimensional characteristics of the grassy background and the carefully detailed depiction of the dog in the foreground. This visual exchange, combined with the dog’s bright yet enigmatic gaze, underscores the fact that portraiture, while first serving to honor the subject, can be simultaneously enjoyed at numerous levels for its inherent artistic value.
