Art Exhibitions & Demonstrations

One of the most interactive and dynamic ways for an artist’s work to find interface with an audience is through live presentations. Whether it be a solo exhibition, a group show, or a live demonstration, the art-loving public (myself included) can find easy access to an “art high” by attending one of these events. We art lovers enjoy art books, viewing images of paintings and sculptures online, and watching documentaries about notable artists. When all is said and done however, art, at least “fine art,” is almost always created to be enjoyed “live” in-person or, as I like to call it, “analog.” Yes, the old fashioned way of viewing paintings on a wall or sculptures on pedestals will never die, even though it may be increasingly accompanied by second-hand viewing through modern media. There’s something of the direct nature of seeing marks, scratches, strokes, and textures (not to mention colors) of original art which cannot be rivaled by experiencing these things second-hand through print or online viewing.

I’m happy that, as this year is still young, there’ve already been opportunities for me to connect with fellow artists and viewers in various show settings. In early February, I got to participate in a group “Pop-up” art show at the lovely Roycroft Inn hotel, in East Aurora, NY. The 19th century construction of the building, along with the old furniture and beautiful (though sadly faded) murals on all the walls of the lobby, really added to the ambiance of the exhibit, which showcased the work of Roycroft artisans and other artists from the community who were invited to participate. It’s one of those venues which truly lends itself to an artistic display.

On March 7, I’ll be participating in the invitational show entitled “You’ve Gotta Have Art Festival,” at the Clarence Presbyterian Church, located at 9675 Main Street, Clarence, NY. This show will run from 10 AM – 4 PM, and will feature many artists and craftspeople working in diverse styles. My booth will feature prints of recent works of pet portraiture, as well as original wildlife paintings, figurative art, and sculpture. One particular attraction I’m excited about will be my giving a live demonstration (space permitting), creating an original work of art, right there on site. This will probably be a drawing, due to the limited area to work with, and not wanting to get paint on the church’s carpets!

Whenever I’ve had the chance to do a live art demo for a group of people, there’s been a wonderful energy in the room. Viewing art is a thrill. Viewing the process of creating art is an entertaining and educational experience all its own. Plus, being able to speak with an artist at work can provide insights and sparks of inspiration available in no other way. This is an experience I hope to repeat on March 7th, and all are invited to attend. I’m told admission for the public will be $1.oo per adult, and 12 and under get in free. Hope to see you there!
