Clay Figurative Sculpture in Progress
Has anyone ever wondered what a bronze sculpture looks like before it’s a bronze sculpture? How about before it’s even a clay sculpture? Just thought I’d post a pic of this unfinished clay sculpture:

Even though it’s shown here, still unresolved in many ways, I like the movement of the clay and the swirling abstract textures which merely suggest the figures which are emerging from the central column.
Sometimes these effects can be left in the final piece to accent the drama or provide added visual excitement to the sculpture.
Often a clay sculpture needs to be built up on a wire frame or armature to maintain it’s stability. This one didn’t need any armature since the clay itself was able to support it’s own weight.
Awesome! Is the one you are standing next to at your reception? (later post)
Similar sculpture, it’s true. The sculpture shown at the reception, “Water Skimmers”, is actually a different piece. Both are fantasy themed and involve multiple female figures arranged as a group.
