Triceratops –  Steel and Hardware

This dinosaur project was truly a first-ever for me. I’d never sculpted in steel before. And certainly I’d never previously used machine tools (milling machines and lathe turning) to create a work of art. But, thanks to some machining classes, I was able to step way outside my comfort zone and design this geometric triceratops head. Affectionately known as “Topsy,” the character stands at around six inches tall, and weighs a hefty sum for his size. The jaw is fully moveable by loosening the screw visible on the left side of the head. Much gratitude to my instructor who helped in figuring out the best solution for the jaw mechanism, and answered plenty of technical questions along the way.
