Fantasy creatures can be beautiful, magical, monstrous, or menacing. Here, three guardians prepare to menace anyone who threatens their hold on territory. The unusual geologic formations jutting from the mountaintop underscore the sculptural feeling of the composition. To retain the nighttime mood of the painting, it was important to maintain a consistent sense of cold moonlight throughout the scene, not letting any of the colors shift too far toward the warmer hues.
