It’s tough to find an animal with more character and charm than camels. That aloof look in the eye, combined with one of nature’s most handsome underbites and carrying a permanent backpack, leaves us feeling like they know something we don’t. A sense of friendliness mixed with just a little snobbishness befits these kings of the desert.

Nevertheless, this scene is far away from any desert. Set in a county fair, these camels are tame and ready to give rides to exuberant children. My delight was in setting the creatures, heads held high, against a backdrop announcing “Rabbits & Poultry” (denoting critters about as different from these dromedaries as you can get). Loose brushstrokes and colorful banners add to the sense of humor and fun.

This painting, created on location, was one of the top award winners in a one-day plein air (open air) painting competition.
