A lot of my fantasy artwork starts with a sketch, showing an overall compositional idea, and then develops from there. That was the case with this scene. I knew I wanted a supersized monster dwarfing a ship, just off a craggy shoreline. As the picture developed, the sea serpent got even bigger, and the action got closer. As it appears a pair of magical nymphs on the rocks have the power to save the day, their glowing energy sphere also provides a point of bright light in an otherwise very foggy atmosphere.
