This miniature hand study, sculpted in air dry clay, gave me the chance to explore some delicate subtleties of gesture made possible with five fingers and a thumb. Hands in art are truly one of the great vehicles of visual expression, right up there with eyes and other facial features. Indeed, many of us have friends known for “talking” with their hands. In this sculpture, the hand is gently reaching upwards, denoting the inherent motivation in every human being to improve, whether it be physically, socially, spiritually, or in other worthy pursuits.
