Particularly inspiring to me in the creation of this canine portrait, was the idea of the great 19th century animal paintings, honoring pedigree dogs and horses. However, unlike some of those older works, I didn’t want this painting to convey a stayed or stiff posture for the animals. While relatively formal in its composition, this is a painting about love. English setters are gentle animals, full of energy, but sweet as can be. Sadie, the one in front, has been an award-winning show dog. From an artistic standpoint, what a delight it was to portray two dogs of the same breed, so similar, yet distinct in affect and conformation.
