Oil studies of wildlife present opportunities to express, with limited brushwork, the structure and soul of animals which could otherwise be rendered in much greater detail.  The shape of this bighorn sheep’s body was painted with broad strokes, yet with sensitivity to the contours of the animal.  Dimensionality is achieved through sunlight reflecting off the horns and neck.  The most abstract portions of the painting are in the background, from which the sheep becomes increasingly distinct as we move from the hindquarters to the head.
