With a wingspan that may reach over seven feet, the majestic golden eagle is a dominant predator in its range which may extend well over 50 square miles of territory. Goldens are known for their enormous nests and often choose a mate for life. In this painting I wanted to create a somewhat unusual composition with the eagle placed left of center and staring intently off the edge of the picture. My desire was to combine this placement with the eagle’s pose to create a subtle tension, as though the bird might suddenly take flight out of the painting.
