One of my artistic influences in painting is Winslow Homer. His maritime compositions were an inspiration to me in creating this seascape/wildlife painting. I knew before beginning that I wanted to depict the gulls and the entire painting using loose brushwork and bold spacial relationships. As the painting progressed, I also became intrigued with the interplay of the water’s depth and the light reflecting on its surface. Impasto paint application serves to heighten the form in areas of the wing feathers and breaking waves. This painting is a recent first place winner in an art exhibition at East Aurora, NY.
