Wildlife art has always been an exciting subject matter for me.  Animals are so mysterious in that their personalities are often masked by a veneer of seeming disconnect from our own human experience. Yet in the case of the magnificent African elephants, their intelligence and advanced social behavior make their life experiences perhaps not so very different from our own.  In this painting, it was a thrill to explore the play of warm African light across the infinitely complex textures of the great loxodonta africana.
