In my figurative paintings, I often enjoy experimenting with the abstract shapes which converge to form the backgrounds.  In addition to the harmony of warm skin tones and cooler shadow areas in this painting, I think it’s the lively interplay of the surrounding textures and shapes which contribute to its overall cohesiveness.
